Thank you for helping West Virginia achieve its Vision to Improve Teaching and Learning (WV VITAL). Almost 10,000 West Virginia educators (43 percent from across the state) participated in the WV VITAL Survey. Data - only released if a minimum of 40 percent and at least 5 of the school faculty or district's school-based licensed educators responded - is now available for almost 400 schools and 36 school districts, providing critical information for making local and state level decisions to improve West Virginia schools.

The final report on the West Virginia VITAL survey is now available. Click here to learn how teaching conditions influence student learning and future employment plans and how perceptions of teaching conditions differ across the state.

The final report demonstrates that West Virginia has a solid foundation of committed educators who believe their schools are good places to work and learn. Comprehensive, sustained efforts to improve teaching and learning conditions will ensure that the state's educators are able to help every child in West Virginia learn.

The WV VITAL data can help the state, districts and schools assess, understand and improve their teaching and learning conditions in order to foster improved perceptions, motivations and performance in schools. Ultimately, this will create positive school environments where all educators are supported, want to work and can thrive.

Using the Data

The success of the WV VITAL effort will prove dependent on the extent to which school communities can use the resulting data to inform real school improvement processes. Toward that end, The New Teacher Center has created a resources page to help schools and communities engage in ongoing and meaningful conversations about potential strategies to improve teaching and learning conditions.

Partners

The West Virginia Board of Education and a host of stakeholder groups representing teachers, principals, superintendents, school boards, communities and business (listed on left side of this page), worked collectively with the New Teacher Center (NTC) to conduct the survey. NTC is a nonpartisan group with a mission to support the development of an effective, dedicated and inspired teaching force. NTC also has vast experience conducting similar surveys across the country.
